Waterfalls and Rapids are some of the most spectacular and must-visit attractions that you should definitely visit while on a safari in the DR Congo. This country is one of the countries with numerous breathtaking waterfalls and some of the interesting ones include;
Livingstone waterfalls
Livingstone falls is one of the most magnificent in not only DRC but Africa in general. The waterfalls comprise of a series of rapids between Kinshasa and Matadi. River Congo transverses through a distance of 340 kilometers and passes over 32 enormous rapids with a total drop of 260 meters. The wide River is forced in an extremely narrow channel (even less than 260 meters wide) and meanders between the mountain ranges.
Inga falls
The Inga waterfalls are some of the largest and most breathtaking falls in DRC and are part of the Livingstone falls and are found in the lower section of Livingstone falls. It’s always difficult to determine the exact width of the Inga waterfalls as the width of River Congo throughout the rapids also fluctuates from only 260 meters to over 4 kilometers. Magnificent threshold of rapids entirely at a sharp bend of River Congo is about 3.6 kilometers wide. Inga waterfalls drop 96 meters over the river course of around 15 kilometers and have a flow rate of more than 42,000 cubic meters per second.
Lofoi falls
Lofoi waterfalls are found within Katanga and are large and visually breathtaking waterfalls of about 165 meters tall and about 50 meters wide on the magnificent Lofoi River. Many other waterfalls in the Katanga region fall over the same cliff.
Kakobola waterfalls
Kakobola falls are found within Bandundu. These are very magnificent falls on the Lufuku River and are around 100 meters wide.
Tangwa falls
Tangwa waterfalls are found between Katanga and Luapula, and are part of the Zambia group of spectacular rapids on River Luapula. While at the area, the river bends numerous arches, potholes and the stream leaves large boulders with some of them balancing.
Mambilima falls
Just like Tangwa falls, Mambilima falls is also found between Katanga and Luapula and also part of the Zambia group of magnificent rapids found on the Luapula River. However, these waterfalls are exceptional because the River squeezes through a number of small Islands hence generating smaller stunning waterfalls.
Inkisi falls
Inkisi falls is one of the most spectacular sites in Democratic Republic of Congo and falls at 60 meters height with a number of cataracts. The width of the River is similar to the height of the waterfalls making it breathtaking and worth visiting.
Kiubo falls and Kiubo Fairy falls
These spectacular waterfalls are found within Katanga region and are characterized by multiple tiers and cascades on River Lufira. These waterfalls are around 270 meters wide and measure a height of 60 meters. Kiubo fairy waterfalls in particular are found on a tributary of River Lufira and have less water volume and therefore have an outstanding appearance.
Boyoma falls
Boyoma waterfalls are found in Kisangani Orientale and are comprised of a group of 7 magnificent cataracts with each of them measuring about 1 kilometer side and several meters wide. The waterfalls are formed on river Lualaba and fall at 61 meters high over a distance of 100 kilometers. At the bottom of the Boyoma falls is where the Congo River begins.
In conclusion, the Democratic Republic of Congo is not only rich with wildlife and vast tropical rain forests but also numerous breathtaking waterfalls such as Livingstone waterfalls, Boyoma waterfalls and Inga falls that are worth visiting while on a safari in the country.
